Having a website is a wonderful thing for a church. By building a website for a church you are able to reach more people, keep your current members up to date with what is happening, provide information and collect donations. However, designing a website for a church is not easy since there are several challenges unique to church websites. When you build a website for a church you should keep the following things in mind.

The largest challenge of building a website for a church is that there are several different audiences that you are trying to reach with your website. Designing a site that meets everyone’s needs without being overwhelming can be difficult. Normally, a church site needs to cater to its current members, people who may be interested in joining and people who already have a church but are either looking for more information or visiting your area. Let’s take a closer look at each of these.

Keeping your current members up to date with the happenings at the church is an important function of a well designed church website. Many people forget to pick up a bulletin or newsletter each week or wind up losing it sometime during the week, so by providing these items on your website you can help to keep everyone in the loop. Not only that, but a website is a great place to list upcoming events, church news, audio sermons in case someone missed a service or any number of other helpful items.

Next, your website needs to provide information for people who may be considering joining. It is helpful to think of a church website as an online ministry. It is a way to reach out to people who normally would not have walked through the doors of the church and let them know all of the great things that you have going on. Creating areas on your site that cater to people who may like to join your community is a terrific way to get new members and build interest in your church.

Finally, for people who are traveling or just passing through, you should provide basic information such as direction to your church, the times and days of your services and answers to any other questions they may have. This is a great way to encourage people to visit you and can be a fun way to network with others who share your faith.

Because a website for a church contains so much information, it can be time consuming to keep it up to date. This is especially true if the person in charge of building or maintaining the website for your church has limited or no knowledge of HTML or graphic design.
